Video: The Art and the Science behind Successful SEO

To effectively succeed in search engine optimization, a person needs to know both the science and art behind it. As Stephan Spencer, author of The Art of SEO explained to SugarSpun Marketing at Pubcon in Las Vegas, SEO is a skills game. Spencer specifically has a background in computer programming, but he recognizes the need for creativity and artistry in developing an effective search marketing campaign.

In short, SEO is definitely a two-fold process. First, you have to be able to attract an audience with remarkable content. Then, the technical side of SEO comes into play in helping the audience find you.

Spencer also discusses how social media is a key driver of SEO. According to him, if you don’t reach social influencers to allow your content more exposure, “you’re dead in the water in terms of your SEO.” There really is power in utilizing Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, Reddit, StumbleUpon and other social channels to reach your audience.

The challenge comes into play since, in typical scenarios, the people that understand all that goes into SEO don’t understand the implications social media has on the process. The same is true from the social media perspective. Spencer advises marketers to have an understanding of each social network since it will help both their SEO and social objectives. He also recommends utilizing experts to balance whatever area you are lacking.
